The Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by one of the IITs on a rotating basis (IIT Bombay organized the 2026 cycle), for admission to M.Sc., Joint M.Sc.-PhD, and other postgraduate programs at IITs, IISc, and other centrally funded institutions. JAM is conducted across seven subjects: Biotechnology (BT), Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Economics, and Geology. The Biotechnology paper is interdisciplinary, drawing primarily from Biology, with additional questions from Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
Biology carries the dominant weightage in the BT paper, with typically only 2 to 4 questions each from Physics and Mathematics, and a more substantial presence from Chemistry. This means a strong Biology and Chemistry foundation, paired with focused, targeted coverage of high-frequency Physics and Math topics rather than exhaustive coverage of those subjects, is generally the most efficient preparation approach.
Section A (Compulsory): 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), 10 questions worth 1 mark and 20 questions worth 2 marks, totaling 50 marks. Negative marking applies here: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong 1-mark question, 2/3 mark deducted for each wrong 2-mark question.
Section B (Compulsory): 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), each worth 2 marks, totaling 20 marks. No negative marking, but also no partial credit, you must select all correct options (there can be more than one) to receive marks for that question.
Section C (Compulsory): 10 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions worth 1 mark and 10 worth 2 marks, totaling 30 marks. No negative marking.
All three sections are compulsory. Given this structure, Sections B and C carry no downside risk for attempting, while Section A requires more careful, confidence-based attempt decisions due to negative marking.
There is no age limit for IIT JAM and no restriction on the number of attempts. Candidates must have completed, or be in their final year of, a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a related discipline. Specific minimum qualifying marks, if any, are set by individual participating institutes for their own admission process, not uniformly by the exam itself.
We specialize exclusively in Life Sciences, which means our Biology coverage, the dominant component of the BT paper, is built by faculty with genuine subject depth, not generalist science tutors. We also give real, structured attention to the Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics components, since these are often either neglected entirely by Biology-focused aspirants or over-studied without regard to how few marks they typically carry, both approaches cost you avoidable marks.

Taxonomy and Classification: Basics of taxonomy, five kingdom classification, binomial nomenclature, classification of plants and animals, evolutionary relationships.
Cell and Molecular Biology: Cell structure and function, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell organelles, cell membrane structure and transport, cell cycle and division (mitosis and meiosis), DNA replication, transcription, translation, genetic code and gene expression, mutations and DNA repair.
Biological Molecules: Structure and function of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and proteins (primary through quaternary structure), enzymes and enzyme kinetics, nucleic acids, vitamins.
Genetics: Mendelian genetics and inheritance patterns, linkage and crossing over, sex determination and sex-linked inheritance, chromosomal aberrations, extranuclear inheritance, gene mapping and pedigree analysis.
Plant Physiology: Photosynthesis (light and dark reactions), respiration (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain), plant hormones and growth regulators, responses to light, temperature, and gravity, photoperiodism and vernalization, water relations and mineral nutrition.
Animal Physiology: Digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory, nervous, and endocrine systems, reproduction.
Ecology and Environment: Ecosystem structure and function, energy flow and nutrient cycling, population and community ecology, biodiversity and conservation, environmental issues.
Evolution: Origin of life, theories of evolution, natural selection and adaptation, speciation, evidence for evolution, human evolution.

Since only 2 to 4 questions typically come from each of Physics and Mathematics, we recommend covering these at a 10+2 to early undergraduate level of depth rather than treating them as equal priority to Biology, Chemistry, and the specialized Biotechnology topics above.
