Paper II: Life Sciences (100 Questions)

Unit 1, Molecules and Their Interaction Relevant to Biology Atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, and biophysical chemistry principles including pH, buffers, and reaction kinetics. Structure, classification, and function of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Protein structural hierarchy from primary through quaternary. Stabilizing interactions in biomolecules. Bioenergetics and thermodynamics in biological systems.

Unit 2, Cellular Organization Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure. Membrane structure, transport mechanisms, and membrane channels. Structure and function of major organelles including mitochondria, chloroplasts, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and peroxisomes. Cell division, the cell cycle, and checkpoint regulation. Basic microbial cell structure and viral organization.

Unit 3, Fundamental Processes DNA replication, repair, and recombination. Transcription and RNA processing. Translation and the genetic code. Enzyme classification, kinetics, and regulation, including Michaelis Menten kinetics and allosteric regulation. Core metabolic pathways including glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and photosynthesis.

Unit 4, Cell Communication and Cell Signaling Signal transduction mechanisms, hormone receptors, and second messenger systems including cAMP, cGMP, calcium, and IP3. G protein coupled receptors and receptor tyrosine kinases. Major signaling cascades including MAPK, JAK-STAT, PI3K-AKT, Wnt, and Notch signaling.

Unit 5, Developmental Biology Gametogenesis and fertilization. Embryonic development including cleavage, gastrulation, and organogenesis. Cell fate determination, differentiation, and pattern formation. Stem cells, pluripotency, and regeneration.

Unit 6, System Physiology, Plant Water relations, mineral nutrition, and transport. Photosynthesis including light and dark reactions and the C3, C4, and CAM pathways. Plant hormones including auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, and ethylene. Photoperiodism, vernalization, and signal transduction in plants.

Unit 7, System Physiology, Animal Nervous system organization, neuron function, and synaptic transmission. Endocrine system and hormonal regulation including the hypothalamic pituitary axis. Circulatory and respiratory systems, including cardiac cycle and gas exchange. Digestive and excretory systems, including kidney function and osmoregulation.

Unit 8, Inheritance Biology Mendelian genetics, gene interactions, and epistasis. Linkage, crossing over, and sex linked inheritance. Chromosomal aberrations including aneuploidy and polyploidy. Population genetics and Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. Genetic mapping, including linkage maps and pedigree analysis.

Unit 9, Diversity of Life Forms Principles of classification and nomenclature across bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Structural organization and diversity across plant and animal groups. Phylogenetic relationships.

Unit 10, Ecological Principles Population ecology, growth models, and regulation. Community ecology including species interactions, succession, and island biogeography.
