What the CSIR NET December 2026 Notification Actually Says

The National Testing Agency released the Joint CSIR UGC NET notification for the December 2026 cycle on 7 October 2026. Registration began on the same day on the official NTA portal for CSIR NET, csirnet.nta.nic.in.

The exam decides eligibility for three outcomes:

  1. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) along with Assistant Professor eligibility
  2. Assistant Professor eligibility only
  3. Admission to PhD programmes only

The JRF stipend reported for qualified candidates is Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years, which is why the JRF cutoff is the number everyone chases.

One confusion needs clearing up. Earlier in the year, the NTA exam calendar showed 20 and 21 December 2026 as tentative dates. Many websites still carry those old dates. The official notification lists 19, 22 and 27 December 2026. Always follow the notification, and keep checking the official portal in case of any change.

My advice is simple. Do not wait for the last week. Server load goes up in the final days, payment gateways slow down, and a small mistake in category or subject can cost you a full cycle. Apply this week, then use the correction window only for genuine corrections.

The Biggest Change in the CSIR NET December 2026 Notification: Life Sciences and Biotechnology Merger

If you are a Life Sciences or Biotechnology student, this is the section to read twice.

Until June 2026, there were two separate exams. CSIR NET Life Sciences was one, and the DBT BET for Biotechnology was the other. From the December 2026 cycle, both are merged. The new discipline is called Life Sciences and Biotechnology (LS and BT), and the exam is now known as the Joint CSIR UGC DBT JRF NET.

Here is what this means in practice:

  • One application, one fee. You no longer register on two different portals or pay two fees.
  • One exam, one result. A single paper decides your eligibility across both streams.
  • Wider benefits for Biotechnology students. Biotechnology candidates who qualify through the joint exam become eligible for all three categories, including Assistant Professor eligibility, as per the official notice issued in January 2026.
  • A revised syllabus. The information bulletin carries the revised syllabus for LS and BT. Do not rely only on old Life Sciences or old DBT BET material.

What should you do about it? Open the bulletin and compare the new syllabus unit by unit with the older Life Sciences syllabus. Mark every topic that is new or more strongly stressed. Biotechnology applications, genetic engineering tools and bioprocess ideas deserve extra attention if your background is pure Zoology or Botany.

There is also a competition angle. More candidates are now under one paper. That may push the cutoff upward, which I explain later in the cutoff section.

CSIR NET December 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Check your eligibility before paying a single rupee.

Educational qualification

  • Candidates need an MSc or equivalent degree, or an integrated BS MS, four year BS, BE, BTech, BPharma or MBBS, with at least 55 percent marks for General and EWS candidates.
  • Candidates from reserved categories such as SC, ST and PwD need at least 50 percent marks. Some summaries list OBC NCL at 55 percent and some at 50 percent, so read the category line in the bulletin carefully.
  • Final year students and those awaiting their results can apply, but they must complete the degree with the required marks within the prescribed time.
  • Candidates with a four year undergraduate degree who have secured at least 75 percent marks are reported eligible for JRF and PhD admission.

Age limit

  • JRF: not more than 30 years as on 1 December 2026.
  • Relaxation applies as per the bulletin. It is reported as up to 5 years for SC, ST, PwD, third gender and women candidates, and up to 3 years for OBC NCL candidates.
  • Assistant Professor and PhD admission: there is no upper age limit.

If you are close to the age boundary, check the exact date calculation in the bulletin. That single line has decided many students’ futures.

CSIR NET December 2026 Application Fee

CategoryRegular feeWith late fee (after 5 November)
General (Unreserved)Rs. 1,150Rs. 1,650
General EWS and OBC NCLRs. 600Rs. 1,100
SC, ST, PwD and Third GenderRs. 325Rs. 825

The late fee is Rs. 500. Paying on time saves you that amount, and it saves you the stress too.

How to Apply Online, Step by Step

  1. Visit the official NTA portal for CSIR NET.
  2. Register with a valid mobile number and email ID that you will actively check until the result.
  3. Fill in the application form with your personal, academic and category details.
  4. Choose your subject carefully. Life Sciences students will now see the combined LS and BT discipline.
  5. Select your exam city choices.
  6. Upload a recent photograph, signature and any category certificate as per the size and format rules.
  7. Pay the fee online and save the confirmation page.
  8. Download and keep a printout of the final form.

Two small habits protect you. Keep your scanned documents ready in the right size before you start. And never use a nickname or a different spelling of your name from your certificates, because name mismatch is one of the most common reasons for problems at the exam centre.

CSIR NET Life Sciences Exam Pattern

The paper is computer based and runs for three hours. It carries 200 marks and is divided into three parts. Based on the pattern followed in recent cycles, the Life Sciences structure looks like this:

PartQuestions givenQuestions to attemptMarks eachTotal marksNegative marking
Part A (General Aptitude)20152300.5
Part B (Core Life Sciences)50352700.5
Part C (Application and Analysis)752541001

The paper is available in English and Hindi. Reports on the merged LS and BT paper also describe a total of 200 marks with the same style of marking, but confirm every figure in the information bulletin, since it is the only final authority.

Notice how much weight Part C carries. It alone gives half of the total marks. Students who spend months only memorising facts and ignore data interpretation, experimental design and application based reasoning usually get stuck below the cutoff.

Also remember that negative marking applies. A wrong answer in Part C costs you one mark, and the effect of that on a 4 mark question is bigger than most students expect. Attempt what you know well, and do not gamble.

Real CSIR NET Life Sciences Cutoff: What the Latest Result Shows

Students keep asking for the real cutoff, not guesses from social media. The most recent official cutoff comes from the June 2026 session. That exam was held on 17 and 18 July 2026, and the cutoff was released in September 2026.

CategoryCutoff
Unreserved50.250
EWS40.500
OBC42.000
SC36.500
ST33.000
PwD25.000

On a 200 mark paper, an Unreserved JRF cutoff of 66.5 percent works out to roughly 133 marks.

There is also a basic minimum qualifying benchmark reported at 33 percent for General, EWS and OBC, and 25 percent for SC, ST and PwD. Do not confuse this with the competitive subject wise cutoff. The minimum only makes you eligible to be considered. The cutoff above is what actually decides the category.

How the Cutoff Has Moved

This is the part most blogs skip, and it is the most important part for your planning.

SessionUnreserved JRF cutoff
June 202551.50 percent
December 202554.00 percent
June 202666.50 percent

Look at that jump. The Unreserved JRF cutoff rose by 15 percentage points in a single year. For other categories, the June 2025 JRF figures were OBC 43.75, SC 37.25 and ST 35.75. In December 2025 they were OBC 44.25, SC 36.00 and ST 34.25. In June 2026 they became OBC 58.00, SC 49.50 and ST 44.75.

What does this mean for the December 2026 exam?

Nobody can promise a December 2026 cutoff, and anyone who gives you one number with full confidence is guessing. The cutoff depends on paper difficulty, the number of test takers and the score distribution. What we can say honestly:

  • The recent trend is upward.
  • The LS and BT merger brings more candidates under one paper, so competition can increase.
  • A tougher paper can pull the cutoff down, and an easier paper can push it up.

So plan for a strong score instead of a minimum score. A sensible mock test target for a General category student is 72 to 78 percent in the last month of practice. That is a cushion of roughly five to ten points over the June 2026 cutoff. For reserved categories, set your target about ten marks above the latest category cutoff.

A 60 Day Plan After the CSIR NET December 2026 Notification

The first exam date is 19 December, so you have around 60 days. This is not enough to start from zero, but it is enough to convert a weak preparation into a competitive one if you work with discipline.

Days 1 to 10: Diagnose and fix the plan

  • Download the revised LS and BT syllabus and highlight every unit.
  • Take one full length mock test and analyse it honestly. Which part cost you the most marks?
  • List your weak units. Typically these are Biochemistry pathways, Molecular Biology mechanisms, Cell Signalling, Ecology and Evolution data, and Methods in Biology.

Days 11 to 30: Strengthen Part B and Part A

  • Revise one unit every two days, using short notes and previous year questions.
  • Practise Part A daily. Numerical ability, data interpretation and logical reasoning can add 25 to 30 marks with very little syllabus load.
  • Solve 30 to 40 Part B style questions every day, then review every wrong answer.

Days 31 to 50: Attack Part C

  • Practise figure based and experiment based questions every day.
  • Learn to read a graph, a gel image or a pathway diagram quickly before looking at the options.
  • Write down the logic behind each answer you get wrong. Part C rewards reasoning, not recall.

Days 51 to 60: Mock tests and revision only

  • Take a full mock test every second day in the same time slot as your allotted shift.
  • Revise formula sheets, pathway summaries and your personal error log.
  • Do not start new topics in the last week.
  • Sleep properly. Tired students lose more marks to silly mistakes than to lack of knowledge.

Common Mistakes Students Make After the Notification

  1. Applying late and rushing the form. Small errors in category or subject cause trouble later.
  2. Trusting old dates. Some pages still show 20 and 21 December.
  3. Ignoring the revised syllabus. The merger changes the content emphasis.
  4. Over attempting in Part C. Guessing under negative marking hurts more than it helps.
  5. Studying without mock tests. Reading a topic is not the same as scoring from it.
  6. Comparing yourself to others. Your category cutoff is your real target.
