Major Update: CSIR NET Is Merging with DBT BET From December 2026

This is the most important update for any CSIR NET Life Sciences aspirant right now, and we want every visitor to this page to see it clearly before anything else.

On 13 January 2026, CSIR-HRDG issued official notice number AB-CSIR0HRDG(OT)/11/2024-Admin-HRDG confirming that CSIR-NET (Life Sciences) and DBT-BET (Biotechnology) are being merged into a single, unified national-level examination: the Joint CSIR-UGC-DBT JRF-NET. This takes effect from the December 2026 cycle onward. The June 2026 cycle was still conducted under the previous, separate CSIR NET format.

Why the merger is happening

According to the official notice, the primary objective is to streamline the national examination framework, eliminate redundancy between two exams that tested substantially overlapping concepts, and create a single, cohesive assessment system that better reflects how interdisciplinary modern Life Sciences and Biotechnology research has become. Previously, a student interested in both research pathways often had to prepare for and sit two separate national exams covering significant common ground. The merger removes that duplication.

What changes, concretely

  • A single exam replaces two. Instead of separately preparing for CSIR-NET Life Sciences and DBT-BET, aspirants will sit one unified exam from December 2026.
  • A revised, merged syllabus covering both Life Sciences and Biotechnology has already been officially published, intended for implementation from the December 2026 cycle.
  • The paper is expected to include optional questions, structured to give both Life Sciences and Biotechnology backgrounds a fair, adequate opportunity to demonstrate their strengths, according to the official notice.
  • Biotechnology candidates gain broader eligibility than before. This is a significant, under-discussed detail: under the old DBT-BET system, Biotechnology candidates had more limited eligibility categories. Under the merged exam, qualifying Biotechnology candidates become eligible for all three categories, the same as Life Sciences candidates: Category 1 (JRF and Assistant Professor eligibility), Category 2 (Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission), and Category 3 (PhD admission only).
  • No reduction in fellowship seats. CSIR-HRDG has officially clarified that the number of available JRF and other fellowship positions is not being reduced as a result of the merger; selection will simply now happen through the single common examination.
  • The exam pattern’s final detailed structure is still being confirmed. As of the most recent updates available, the merged syllabus has been released, but NTA and CSIR-HRDG have not yet finalized every detail of the new question paper structure. We are tracking this closely.

If you are targeting December 2026 or later, here is the practical reality: your core Life Sciences subject knowledge, the 13-unit syllabus that has always formed the backbone of CSIR NET Life Sciences, carries forward directly into the merged exam. The new syllabus builds on this existing foundation rather than replacing it, adding Biotechnology-specific depth alongside it. This means there is no reason to delay starting your preparation while waiting for the final pattern announcement. Strong fundamentals in molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and the rest of the core syllabus remain exactly as valuable under the new exam as they were under the old one. What’s genuinely new is that building working familiarity with core Biotechnology application areas, things like recombinant DNA technology, bioprocess engineering, and genetic engineering applications, is now a smart addition to your preparation, since these appear more heavily in DBT-BET’s traditional syllabus and are expected to carry into the merged paper.

About CSIR NET Life Sciences

The CSIR NET (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, National Eligibility Test), conducted jointly with UGC by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of CSIR-HRDG, determines eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor or Lectureship positions in Life Sciences. It is conducted twice a year, generally in June and December, and Life Sciences typically draws the largest applicant pool among CSIR NET’s five subjects (Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Earth Sciences), making it one of India’s most competitive national-level science eligibility exams. This is a genuinely national exam, with candidates and exam centers across every state, not a regional one, and our coaching is built to serve aspirants wherever they are in India, not just students who can travel to Hyderabad.

Exam Pattern (Current Format)

  • Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT), 3 hours
  • Total: 145 questions across three parts, candidates attempt 75 combined, 200 total marks
  • Part A: General Aptitude, common to all subjects, 2 marks per correct answer, 0.5 marks deducted for each wrong answer
  • Part B: Subject-specific questions covering core Life Sciences concepts, 2 marks per correct answer, 0.5 marks deducted for each wrong answer
  • Part C: Higher-order analytical and application-based questions, 4 marks per correct answer, 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer

This is the pattern for the current, pre-merger format, applicable through the June 2026 cycle. As detailed above, this is expected to evolve for the December 2026 cycle once the new joint exam’s official pattern is fully confirmed.

Eligibility Criteria

A Master’s degree in Life Sciences or a related discipline (or equivalent), with a minimum of 55% marks for General and EWS candidates, and 50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD candidates. Candidates in their final year of Master’s are also eligible to apply provisionally. For the JRF award specifically, the upper age limit is 30 years as of the first day of the month in which the exam concludes, with a 5-year relaxation for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and women candidates. There is no upper age limit for the Lectureship-only eligibility category.

JRF and SRF Stipend

Qualifying for JRF currently carries a monthly stipend of 37,000 rupees for the first two years, which increases to 42,000 rupees per month as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) from the third year onward, in addition to house rent allowance based on the city of posting. These figures were revised upward in recent years, so if you see older, lower figures cited elsewhere, confirm against the current official notification.

Understanding the Cutoff

CSIR NET Life Sciences cutoffs are reported differently from most other CSIR NET subjects. Because Life Sciences draws by far the largest applicant pool among the five subjects, and the exam runs across multiple shifts, NTA applies an Equipercentile normalization method, which produces cutoffs expressed as high percentile-style figures rather than a simple percentage of the 200 total marks. As a verified reference point, the June 2024 JRF cutoff was 99.08% for Unreserved candidates, 96.52% for EWS, 96.45% for OBC-NCL, 91.79% for SC, 87.82% for ST, and 69.14% for PwD. Lectureship cutoffs are somewhat lower than JRF within each category.

These figures look unusually high compared to other CSIR NET subjects because of the normalization method, not because Life Sciences requires near-perfect raw scores. A cutoff of 99% reflects your normalized percentile standing relative to other Life Sciences candidates that session, not the percentage of questions you personally need to answer correctly.
